Review of the movie "The Zookeeper's Wife" (2017)

A drama about the Second World War directed by Niki Caro ("North Country") He tells the truly incredible story of the owners of the Warsaw Zoo, who hid Jews during the German occupation.

Spouses Antonina (Jessica Chastain, "Interstellar", "The Servant") and Jan (Johann Geldenberg, "One Day in My Life") Zhabinsky is trying to preserve his zoo and the remnants of humanity by protesting the ambitions of the director of the Berlin Zoo (Daniel Bruhl, who, apparently, will always have to play Nazis, "Inglourious Basterds", "The First Avenger: Confrontation") at a time when people become violent animals.

"The Zookeeper's Wife" is a well-shot, old-fashioned touching drama, the heart of which is in the right place, and which still leaves behind a feeling of disembodied. Film critics have one saving cliche in case they don't really like a film about some tragic historical events. In this case, the critic writes "An incredible story that undoubtedly deserves the best film" and his conscience does not torment him at night. "The zookeeper's wife" is a good movie and it doesn't deserve a cliche in the review, but such an amazing story could really be told much more vividly, much more boldly and frankly. Where more needs to be shown, the film turns its eyes away and where less needs to be shown, condescendingly chews out well-known truths to the audience.

The tape has its advantages. The scenes of the daily life of the Zhabinsky family in their zoo are pleasant to watch, the animals are infinitely cute (but don't get too attached, the film is about the war after all), a lot of attention is paid to small details, for example, all the extras in the frame speak Polish, and Niki Karo has proven her talent in previous works to portray ordinary, but strong women in difficult life situations. In addition, there are currently not enough main characters in the cinema, and even more so the main characters who change the world for the better with willpower and ordinary human decency, rather than the methodical destruction of henchmen on the way to the final boss.

Like most films about prominent historical figures, "The Zookeeper's Wife" only fully highlights the character mentioned in the title. The rest of the characters - Antonina's husband, her son, and the Jews - rather serve as decorations to reveal the main character. Unfortunately, none of the cast and crew decided to step outside their comfort zone, except for Jessica Chastain. The actress had to not only pet rabbits there, but also play alongside dangerous wild animals, and this certainly deserves respect.

In addition, "The zookeeper's wife" suffers from a certain secondary condition. The film tells us the story of the greatest tragedy in history in the same images and colors that we have already seen many times in much better films, and it really lacks its own voice.
